Currently, Devendra is contributing a song on the new John Martyn tribute album.  The English guitarist and trip hop legend passed away this past January at the age of 60.  The album is compiled of 22 songs remixed by fellow musicians presenting fans with their own interpretations of Martyn’s music.  Other artists featured on the record include Beck, Snow Patrol, Beth Orton, Paolo Nutini, David Gray, Vetiver, The Swell Season, and more.  As of now, no release date has been announced.

At the end of summer Devendra will return to the states for two performances; first, on August 14th at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD.  Second, he will be making an appearance at this year’s 2010 Austin City Limits Festival!

The ACL line up has been officially announced and includes headlining performances by The Flaming Lips, The Eagles, Muse, Phish, The Strokes and M.I.A.  The three day festival takes place October 8-10th in Austin’s Zilker Park.  The event offers 130+ artists from across the globe, fun for the kids at “Austin Kiddie Limits,” the best of local eats and artisans, and the latest in eco-friendly and green happenings.  The festival operation prides itself on being 100% carbon neutral.  

Check out some of the other artists who will be appearing: The Black Keys, Cage The Elephant, Vampire Weekend, Broken Bells, Pete Yorn, Norah Jones, Ozomatli, Robert Randolph & The Family Band, Amos Lee, Blues Travelers, The Verve Pipe, Switchfoot, The Gaslight Anthem, and so many more!

Since his debut album, however, Banhart continues to release and record his signature folksy-acoustic albums. In 2002, it was “Oh Me Oh My;” in 2004 it was “Rejoicing in the Hands” and “Nino Rojo;” in 2005 it was “Cripple Crow;” then “Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon” in 2007; and “What Will We Be” in 2008.

His eclectic style meshes well with his eclectic background. He was born to a Venezuelan mother and American father, and when he was two his parents divorced leaving Banhart with his mother in Venezuela. When he was 14, he moved with his mother and stepfather to California. Afterward he studied at the San Francisco Art Institute on a scholarship, lived in a predominately homosexual neighborhood in San Francisco, moved to France and back, and started his music career by playing at a gay wedding.

On March 23 and 24, Banhart is playing gigs in San Francisco and Los Angeles, respectively. No more tour dates have been announced, and his official Web site is currently undergoing construction.
